Simple, Meaningful Ways to Memorize Scripture All Year Long

If you want to be more intentional with memorizing scripture in the New Year, here are some tips that have helped me. I’ve also rounded up a few tips from Sheila Puckett, a long-time Bible Drill teacher at Cross City Church in Euless, Texas.
Even a few quiet minutes with God’s Word can refresh and encourage our hearts. If you’ve ever wanted to meditate more intentionally on Scripture, memorizing a verse is a wonderful place to begin.
The good news? Scripture memorization doesn’t have to feel overwhelming or academic. With a few simple, creative practices, it can become a meaningful rhythm woven into your everyday life.
Below are practical tips to help you make the most of your Scott Ink Scripture Calendar and keep God’s Word close to your heart throughout the year.
Scripture Memorization Tips That Actually Work
1. Read the Verse Aloud
Start by reading the verse out loud several times. Hearing the words engages a different part of your brain and helps you become familiar with the rhythm and flow of the verse.
2. Break It Down
Longer verses can feel intimidating at first. One helpful approach is to divide the verse into short, meaningful phrases. Memorize each phrase on its own, then begin linking them together until the full verse flows naturally.
For example, the January verse says:
“The Sovereign Lord is my strength;
he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
he enables me to tread on the heights.”
— Habakkuk 3:19
You might break it down like this:
- “The Sovereign Lord is my strength”
Focus: Where my strength comes from – not myself, but God. - “He makes my feet like the feet of a deer”
Focus: God gives stability, balance and confidence, even on uncertain ground. - “He enables me to tread on the heights”
Focus: God empowers me to move forward, rise above challenges, and walk where I could not on my own.
Once you’re comfortable with each phrase, begin saying two phrases together, then all three. Over time, the verse will come naturally – and its meaning will sink deeper into your heart.
3. Write It Out
Writing scripture by hand is a powerful tool for memory. Research shows that writing reinforces learning, and many people find they retain verses more easily this way. Write the verse repeatedly in a notebook or on index cards.
This is one tip emphasized by Sheila Puckett, a 20-year veteran of a Bible Drill program. As Sheila often reminds students and adults alike, repetition truly is key to retention.
4. Place It Where You’ll See It
Write the verse on a card or sticky note and place it somewhere you’ll see it often – on your bathroom mirror, kitchen counter, desk or bedside table. Sheila shares that students often tape verses to their bathroom mirror so they can read them while brushing their teeth. If you have the Scott Ink Scripture Calendar, put it in a place that you will see often. I’ve seen people put it next to their coffee pot, on their nightstand or next to their laptop in their office, for example.
5. Visualize the Message
Create a mental picture that represents the verse or its meaning. Associating scripture with imagery can help anchor it in your mind and make recall much easier.
6. Pray the Verse
Use the verse directly in your prayers. Speaking God’s Word back to Him makes Scripture personal and meaningful, and it naturally deepens memorization. For the January verse, Habakkuk 3:19, you can pray something like this:
Sovereign Lord, you are my strength. When the path before me feels rocky or uncertain, Lord, steady my steps and give me confidence to walk in your ways and where you lead. Help me trust you more as you lift me higher and carry me forward. I praise you for the new heights you will carry me to. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
7. Reflect on Its Meaning
Take time to meditate on what the verse means to you personally and how it applies to your life right now. When a verse resonates with your heart, memorization often follows naturally.
8. Use Helpful Tools
Consider using a Bible memorization app if that fits your learning style. Sheila recommends the Bible Drill App ($.99), which offers guided practice, repetition and even fun challenges that make memorization engaging. Some apps allow reminders, quizzes or progress tracking.
9. Learn with a Partner
Scripture memorization doesn’t have to be a solo activity. Find a friend, spouse, or family member and learn together. You can encourage one another – or even turn it into a lighthearted challenge.
10. Start and End Your Day with Scripture
Keep the verse by your bedside and read it first thing in the morning and again before going to sleep. As Sheila says, “Repetition is the key to retention,” and bookending your day with God’s Word is a powerful habit.
A Gentle Reminder for Everyday Life
I created the Scott Ink Scripture Calendar as a beautiful, practical reminder of God’s Word – something you can place in a strategic spot where you’ll naturally see it often. Over time, those brief glances turn into reflection, memorization and prayer.
By storing God’s Word in our hearts, we are shaped and strengthened by it. As Psalm 119:11 reminds us:
“I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”
My hope is that these simple practices help you enjoy the journey of keeping Scripture close all year long.
