Intentional Advent: Day 20

As we draw nearer to the day we celebrate Jesus’ birth, it seemed appropriate to study the name of Jesus more in depth.

Unlike nowadays, Mary didn’t choose the name for her baby from a list or a book. She didn’t spend months saying it aloud to make sure it sounded right.

Mary was informed by an angel what the name of her baby would be. She was told that her baby would be called Yeshua. This is the Hebrew name for Jesus meaning “The Lord is Salvation” (taken from crossway.org in the article What The Name Jesus Means For Believers)

This is not the only name Jesus was given. Below is a list of names given for Jesus that I took from The Navigators website that are used throughout the Bible:

Immanuel – Matthew 1:23

Lamb Of God – John 1:29

Alpha and Omega – Rev. 22:13

King of the Jews – Matt. 27:37

Wonderful Counselor

Mighty God

Everlasting Father

Prince of Peace – all found in Isaiah 9:6

The Bread of Life – John 6:35

The Redeemer – Isaiah 59:20

The Living Stone – 1 Peter 2:4
